RatholeRadio 77 – 29th Apr 2012
The last regular show before the Rathole Roadshow event ion May 11th. I played a wide selection of music as always, and I even managed to squeeze in a live acoustic track. Lots of chilled out tunes this time for some reason, so put your feet up and enjoy.
- 00:00 – Juanitos – Soul Africa – CC BY-SA Licensed – Juanitos is an internationally-minded SoulJazz inspired group from Chambry, France. They’ve been making all kindsa exotic beats since 1991. Soul Africa is an irresistible Afrobeat & reggae-leaning funk album released in 2010 on Jamendo.
- 06:58 – P’Chenga – What’s The Difference? – License Unknown – Friends of mine and fellow Rathole Roadshow artists. I wanted to share a track of theirs. This is an old live recording that I know the lads aren’t massively happy with but it’s the best thing we have at the moment. They have a new drummer and will have new better recorded material soon.
- 11:17 – Secret Archives Of The Vatican – Blue Moons – CC BY-NC Licensed – A friend told me recently there wasn’t enough drum & bass in the show lately. This is a nod in their direction. Secret Archives Of The Vatican AKA Vince Millet is a giant in the CC music scene. Check out Broken Drum Records if you haven’t already.
Writing On The Wall Piracy event, I’m chairing the discussion. Thursday May 3rd at The Attic in Parr St, Liverpool. £4 entry. CC, ORG and Ian Prowse.
- 22:38 – Dan Bull – Sharing Is Caring – CC Zero Licensed – UK protest rapper Dan Bull has released this latest single. You can hear a bit of Eminem influence in this Facebook track. Friend of the show Tim Dobson has been involved in promoting this and it’s an attempt to get a CC track into the UK charts. They’ve done 10 remixes and if you buy each one it counts towards the same chart entry. Madness. I suppose it does show how pointless the charts are these days ultimately.
- 26:34 – 20lb Sounds – Jimmy Carter – CC BY-SA Licensed – Whoops, how did this get in there? Just thought I’d remind you of this track in the build up to the Rathole Roadshow in Liverpool on Friday May 11th. FREE EP AVAILABLE.
- 34:54 – Electronic Ping Pong Orchestra – Eternal Hope – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – My good friend Bob and his project Electronic Ping Pong Orchestra. I like this bit of minimal electro and it’s off a CD he kindly gave me.
- 38:08 – Damscray – Saria Bride – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – An interesting bit of trip hop influenced music. I’ve played this artist before but I still don’t know a terrific amount about them.
46:00 – LIVE TRACK – “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out”. I’ve played this before but it’s a blues standard and I love it, so I figured I’d do it again.
- 51:10 – Ex-Friendly – Simply Bootieful – CC BY-NC-ND Licensed – A nice piece of laid back soul from Free Music Archive. It’s a bit long but it’s a great relaxed tune. Has a classic soul sound and I’m reminded of Al Green in parts by the vocal.
Next show will be the roadshow live on Friday May 11th @ 8pm UK. 3 hours plus of great live music. Come and get involved.
63:37 – Tenpenny Joke – Never Enough – CC BY-SA Licensed – This is actually 2 tracks by Aussie rockers Tenpenny Joke, I’ve played them before. The acoustic picking bit that’s mixed in at the end is listed as a separate track called Shadow In The Glass. You can get this on Jamendo and it’s from the album Ambush On All Sides which I recommend.

RatholeRadio 76 – 15th Apr 2012
Back once again it’s the incredible, Rathole. This time we have guests too as I interviewed Sonny & Colin from The Corinthians in a local pub. It was chaotic but amazing. I hope you enjoy it. There’s also a selection of eclectic tunes to keep you entertained.
- 00:00 - C. bass .t.n – Star Shift – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A track I heard via Jamendo dance radio and I liked the slightly industrial synth sound mixed with a more house beat. A German artist. This is taken from the 2009 album Transparent Moments.
- 07:22 - The Dopamines – Paid In Full - License Unknown – A nice bit of melodic punk sent in by listener Mark Horsley.
- 11:43 - The Corinthians – “The Quitter… in Dub” – License Unknown – A track from the Corinthians to lead into our interview.
13:30 – INTERVIEW – Sonny & Colin from The Corinthians. A chaotic chat at Ye Olde Cracke pub in Liverpool. Contains copious swearing so close your ears if you’re easily offended. A big thanks also to Rob The Anti-Fascist Manager and Cyril the dog.
- 25:25 - The Corinthians – “The Hot One feat Nicky Talent” – License Unknown
27:58 – INTERVIEW continues…
- 39:25 - The Corinthians – “Don’t Worry” – License Unknown
- 45:30 - Thom Morecroft – “Better Than I Thought” - License Unknown – Another artist appearing at the Rathole Roadshow on Friday May 11th at LEAF, Liverpool. Come down, you need to hear Thom’s voice live believe me. This track is available via Soundcloud.
- 48:34 - Paul Platt – “Everything” – License Unknown – I chatted to Paul on email and he sent me some original tracks. I really like this one. Great bluesy guitar sound and an interesting beat. He says:
Quantum Jazz man Don_S emailed me about his new project Accidental Notes. It’s a blog where he’ll be posting new solo stuff he’s working on. It features some different styles and the tracks will build up as he goes. Check it out..
- 60:45 - GRENOUER – “Last Stop” - License Unknown – A great bit of metal from this Russian band. I got the EP Computer Crime via email recently and with that name I expected electro. I obviously missed the part where it said “metal greetings from Russia” though. They hail from St Petersburg and this EP has been picked up by Copro Records in the UK. Find our more about them via wikipedia.

Weekly Rewind #106
Ahoy hoy! As Mr Burns and my good friend Mr Bradley Kuhn would say. By all accounts it was the preferred greeting of telephone pioneer Alexander Graham Bell but has now been supplanted by the simpler “hello”, or perhaps “wasssup?” if you remember those Budweiser ads from the 90′s. It’s been a little while since my last update but thankfully not the month long absence of last time. Life has continued apace and there’s much to tell. I’ll pick out the highlights from the last fortnight and share them with you now. I’ll also look ahead to exciting events due in the week or two. So let’s do this…
March has given way to April and spring should be on the way. You wouldn’t know it from the recent weather though. Last week it was over 20 degrees Celsius and now we’re back near zero. Snow in some parts of the UK and ice on the roads. I knew I shouldn’t have put my shorts on last week, it was only tempting fate. Anyway, I’m sure Al Gore has some thoughts on this. If he’s not too busy jetting around the world warning people about their carbon footprints. The little tinker. But I digress. I last reported back in mid-March and since then I’ve posted about my planned changes to this very site. Those are still ongoing but should be completed in the next week. I’m migrating a lot of stuff from Drupal to WordPress. Not because I have anything against Drupal of course, it just seems silly to use both on one site when I don’t need to. I’ve transferred most of the content and got the new site structure sorted. I just need to find (or knock together) a decent theme and then I’ll switch them over. I don’t want to break the RSS feeds or current URL structure if possible so it’s a delicate process. Stay tuned.
Monty Burns, fan of the "ahoy hoy"
What else have I been up to? Well, I finally got myself a new phone. An all singing, all dancing, Galaxy Nexus, running the shiny new Android 4.0. I’ve only had it a week but I’m settling in already. I unlocked the bootloader straight away and got it hooked up to the Android developer kit on Ubuntu with the help of Andy (Oscillik) from LivLUG. He’s had the phone a bit longer and he’s my go to expert on these matters. I let the phone restore all it’s setting from “the cloud” as the kids like to call it, and it seems this was a mixed blessing. It was cool that it knew all my wifi networks, installed all my apps and updated so easily. But I have been seeing some stability issues with the Android browser and suffering app crashes. The browser is embedded into so many other apps that I think this is the culprit. I have a plan to reflash the phone and not restore anything this time but set it up manually. I’ll let you know how that goes. Minor niggles aside I’m enjoying Ice Cream Sandwich very much. It’s slick and seems a big advance from the Android 2.3 I was running before. I’m still waiting to see what CyanogenMod 9 brings to the table when it’s finally released. This phone is so powerful it feels more and more like they’re starting to be our main computers. I’m reminded of Quantum Leap in a strange way but it feels like we’re heading there. Not time travel, but ever more sophisticated handheld computers at least. I eagerly await the day my phone will remark – “Ziggy says there’s a 90% probability you’ll enjoy this fart app Dan”. I can dream.
In other news we announced the long awaited details of the next OggCamp, and decided to keep the name after all the renaming drama. It will be called OggCamp 12, to the relief of many. It’s happening on the weekend of 18th & 19th of August in Liverpool again. Yeah, you can blame me for that. It may be a bit further for all you Southerners but it’s a lot nearer for those coming from Scotland and other places. So it cuts both ways. We have an amazing venue in LJMU Art & Design Academy and I have to thank my wonderful friends at Open Labs for all their help. They’re sponsoring all the venue costs for us and taking care of a massive chunk of the hassle. We have an official hotel which is in sight of the venue and 5mins walk if you’re slow. So no paying for taxis to and from the venue this year. I’ll let you all know the hotel details as soon as we release them. If you want to keep up to date you should follow OggCamp on Twitter, Identi.ca, Google+, Lanyard or Facebook. You can also keep an eye on oggcamp.org where more details will be posted soon.
I seem to be rambling a fair bit so I’ll summarise some of the other recent events more quickly. I presented FLOSS Weekly with Randal last night and our guest project was Chamilo. It made a fascinating show and I really recommend you have a listen. I didn’t realise the size of this project and if there’s one area where free and open tools matter most it’s in schools. Rather dramatically a sound proofing panel fell out of my studio window and hit me on the back of the head during the show. It was only light so didn’t really hurt, but left me pretty dazed. You’ll hear a loud noise in the background at the start of the interview, that was it. Luckily I wasn’t on camera at the time but it would have made a hilarious blooper. I also attended Liverpool LUG last night where we had a great talk from Bob Ham on IPv6. Not a subject I know a massive amount about but I felt more confident after it.
My band 20lb Sounds are on a short sabbatical right now while our drummer follows England’s cricket team out in Sri Lanka. Alright for some hey? He’s back after the weekend and then we’ll crack on with training for our upcoming gigs. We have 3 in a week which is a first for us. Starting with the Rathole Radio live event at LEAF on Friday May 11th, we’ll continue with a gig at The Cavern Club the following Tuesday as part of the International Pop Overthrow Festival we played last year. Finally there’s another gig at The Cavern Pub on the following Friday. It should be fun and I’m looking forward to it. In the meantime I’ve stalled on completing my long threatened solo album but it is getting somewhere I promise. I hope to have that ready in the next few weeks. That just about brings us up to date. So let’s talk about what’s coming up.
Upcoming:
First up is Easter weekend obviously. Linux Outlaws may be pushed back a bit from Monday night but will happen early in the week. I may well be co-hosting FLOSS again on Wednesday but I don’t know for certain yet. Then there’ll be another Rathole Radio on the following Sunday, April 16th. I’m also in the process of completing a slightly overdue article about digital development in Liverpool and Internet access for my Seven Streets technical column. I’ll let you know about that as soon as I can. In the meantime stay tuned for website changes, more music, more writing and a lot more podcasting. I hope you all have a great Easter Holiday and take care of yourselves.
Over and out,
Dan
RatholeRadio 75 – 1st Apr 2012
It’s Rathole Radio 75 already and it feels like only yesterday the show started. We’re not quite over he hill yet you young whipper snappers. Get off our lawn! I played my usual eclectic mix of music, conjured the image of Sir David Attenborough naked (pass the mind bleach) and performed a live tune. A pretty regular show then. Hope you enjoy it.
- 00:00 – Black Bones – Rock N Roll- CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A cracker from Black Bones, the Italian pirate rockers I played recently. I liked the raw punk feel of this tune and it seems to be one of the few non-Pirate themed songs off their album Pirates Of The Coast.
- 06:49 – Symphony Of Science – The Greatest Show On Earth – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – I was reminded of this site by CCHits this week. I played “A Glorious Dawn” some time ago but there’s a whole collection of these tracks. They’ve taken recordings of popular scientists and auto-tuned them into songs. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but this is nicely done. Listen out for David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins.
- 10:08 – 108 Not – Katatonia – CC BY-ND Licensed – Suggestion from listener Daz Fuller. Russian alt-rock/metal band. Don’t know a lot more about them but it sounds good. From their self-titled album.
The Corinthians will be joining us for a chat very soon. You can catch them live at the Rathole Roadshow on Friday May 11th at LEAF On Bold St along with 20lb Sounds, P’Chenga and Thom Morecroft. Entry is free and all are welcome so tell your friends!
- 18:48 – Loudog – Music – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A German reggae band who I’ve played on the show before, but not this song. I heard this tune on The Bugcast some time ago and then it cropped up on CCHits this week. I suspect that Dave Lee submitted it. He gets everywhere.
- 22:13 – L’Fabrik – On Arrose – CC BY Licensed – Some French rap for you. It’s been a while since I played any. No idea what they’re saying for the most part, it could be rdiculously offensive but hopefully not. Nice beats. Suggested to me by listener Simon Vass. Released 2009, on Jamendo.
- 29:37 – Paul and Storm – Live – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – I saw Paul & Storm live in Manchester supporting Jonathan Coulton. Apparently they wrote this tune during a challenge to write a song like JoCo. JonTheNiceGuy, creator of CCHits was sat next to me at that gig BTW.
- 33:15 – YACHT – Shangri-La (instrumental) – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – The opening track from the last CCHits weekly show and man it’s a cracker. Beautiful bit of instrumental music. It’s doing really well on CCHits and getting loads of votes.
My friend and cohort Andrew Bates is now doing a music show on Halton Community Radio. You can download his first show right here. It’s well worth a listen.
- 44:00 – Leslie Hunt – Lonely Home – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – From her album “Your Hair Is On Fire”, possibly a tribute to the late Michael Jackson.
- 50:12 – LIVE SONG – My rendition of “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” by Pearl Jam. One of my all time favourite bands. Hope the Eddie Vedder impression stands up.
- 54:21 – Overcolored - Entering The Rat Race – CC BY-NC-ND Licensed – Polish instrumental rock I heard on Jamendo. Worth checking out their album.
- 64:13 – The Beards – You Should Consider Having Sex With A Bearded Man – License Unknown – The crazy Australian beard loving band are back. This track was actually released last year but I just came across it. Check out the video it’s great!

Change Is Gonna Come
Not That Kind Of Change
That’s right, Otis Redding famously sang the phrase and I’m gonna say it too. A change is gonna come. Ok, he was talking about segregation and civil rights in America and I’m talking about changing my website, but it’s still a change nonetheless.
I’ve been pondering how best to utilise DanLynch.org and get the most out of it for a while. I want to see a lot more activity here and I don’t want the blog to be so separate from everything else. The reason for this separation is technical. The blog runs on WordPress but the rest of my site is built with Drupal. They’re both lovely Open Source PHP systems but it struck me recently I should really just use WordPress for the whole thing. All I’m doing in Drupal now is making some static pages around this blog anyway. WordPress can do that. So as we speak I’ve copied this blog onto some development web space and I’m reworking that version. Kicking the tires, checking the oil, and other such motoring metaphors.
The content is already in there and it shouldn’t take long. Famous last words. It probably won’t mean much difference for anyone reading this but it’ll allow me to centralise. I’ve been trying to do too many things at once and spreading myself a bit thin, as is often my way. Music, podcasting, production, videos, technical writing and more general blogging can all be incorporated. This way I can feed all content into here and activity will go up. I can use a music page to embed tracks from Bandcamp, post YouTube videos of performances and much more. Hopefully building momentum.
I hope it won’t take long but expect to see some changes very soon. A new leaner, meaner and angrier (angrier? I’m running out of now) machine. I’m back to motoring metaphors, I don’t even care much about cars, never been an interest of mine. I must have absorbed too much Top Gear from the TV earlier tonight.
Stay tuned, thanks for your patience and in the meantime you can enjoy the genius of Otis with the video above
Dan
UPDATE: Apparently that song was written by Sam Cooke originally. Otis did a famous version.

RatholeRadio 74 – 18th Mar 2012
Another Rathole Radio is upon and this one is a bumper edition. 71mins to be precise. I must have felt more chatty or something, hard to see how that’s possible. This was broadcast on Mother’s Day here in the UK but I didn’t have a special song for that. Instead I performed a folk song to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Saturday. I hope you enjoy the show.
- 00:00 - Freeky Cleen & Dickey F – GONE TRAIN BLUES - CC BY-SA Licensed – 2 artists I’ve played separately before but now they’ve joined forces to create this great slice of blues rock. You don’t wanna miss it. There’s a whole album available on Jamendo.
- 06:40 - Tracing Arcs – Babydoll (just chillin’ mix) - CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A great track that put me in mind of Portishead a bit at times. No bad thing.
- 12:47 - Farewell Republic – Wake - Licensed Unknown - Heard this via fellow North West podcaster Alan Carr and his show Darkhorse Radio.
- 22:32 - Phil Lee – 25 Mexicans - License Unknown – Another one I heard via Alan Carr when he submitted it for AMPed some time ago. I’ve been keeping it in my pocket. What an artist Phil Lee is and what a song.
- 26:25 - Silent Strike – Infinit - CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – This one I heard via CCHits.
- Rathole Gig News - 4 acts in the line up now: The Corinthians, P’Chenga, Thom Morecroft and of course 20lb Sounds.
- 36:26 - EGOMOTEL – LAST NIGHT -CC BY-NC-SA Licensed
- 40:17 - Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps - Whet My Appetite - License Unknown – This is a track I heard on The Roadhouse podcast. Read her bio here – http://www.teresajames.com/bio-v2.htm
- 49:06 – LIVE TRACK – A bit of folk for St Patrick’s Day, “Dirty Old Town” by Ewan MacColl. I heard The Dublinersversion many times while growing up. My Dad is a big fan.
- 55:16 - Bill Borman – No Man Is An Island - CC BY-NC Licensed - Another track from CCHits. At first I wasn’t sure what to make of it but it quickly grew on me. A powerful song and a great performance full of dynamics and feeling. Enjoy!
- 68:15 - Model Society – Horizons - License Unknown – Another poached AMPed submission. This time fro Rowley at The DarkCompass Podcast. These guys were played by Steve Lamaq on 6 Music apparently too, I can see why.

- 00:00 – Tab Benoit – Come And Get It – License Unknown – Heard this on the Roadhouse podcast number 324 and had to play it. Great tune. Check out Tab Benoit’s website and his new album Medicine.
- 06:50 – Lejo Harmeson & Essence – Complicated Man – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – Heard this on the CCHits weekly review show and liked it. Got to the site, listen to the shows and vote, we need people to participate!
- 10:50 – Regra 4 – Samba Groove, a volta do homem pro mato – CC BY-SA Licensed - One I found randomly while surfing Jamendo.
- 15:41 – Partition 36 – The Optic Nerve – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – I played a track called “I Love Penguins” by this artist some time ago and this is a great follow up. Lovely slice of industrial sounding electro. Thanks to GamerChick02 for the tip.
- 21:38 – Derelict Earth – The Darkest Serenity – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – A French metal band (from Grenoble), you don’t see many of those. They’ve obviously been listening to some early Metallica I think, and that’s no bad thing.
- 30:22 – Chamber Music Society Of Lincoln Center – Pachelbel’s Canon In D – License Unknown – Kindly sent to me by Don_S who asked why I don’t play much classical music. As he guessed it’s often the length of the pieces and it’s tough to fit them in. I’m a fan though. (Lincoln Center blurb)
- 36:46 – Teddy Goldstein & The Goldsteins – New York City – License Unknown - Heard this on AMPed 280 and it was submitted by Peter Clitheroe of Suffolk & Cool. This reminded me of The Eagles in the vocal style and it’s a nice tune. I bought it off CD Baby.
- 43:14 – LIVE TUNE – Medicine Man by Dan Lynch – A tune I wrote some years ago and I have a feeling I might have played it live on the show before. I only realised after I’d done it. Well never mind, people seemed to enjoy it anyway. I’m hoping to soon record an album of tunes like this that have gotten away over the years.
- 48:49 – ‘Til Dusk – One By One – License Unknown – Emailed to me by Chris from the band. They’re based in Southampton in the UK. This track is taken from their debut album Cold Lust which is released May 16th and you can find out more at www.tildusk.co.uk
Guest next time! Wayne Mayers AKA Fit & The Conniptions.
- 57:59 – Dual Core – Magnificent Seven (feat Nerdcore) – All Rights Reserved- A big thanks to Mark Horsley for emailing this track to me. I’ve heard Dual Core a few times but not this track. It’s from the 2009 album Next Level which you can get on Bandcamp and other places and it features almost everyone in Nerdcore it seems. Beefy, MC Frontalot and more.

I Have A Bad Feeling About This…
… Well actually I don’t. I have quite a good feeling about it. Check out this project to make an independent comedy film here in Liverpool. It’s about 2 Star Wars fans on a quest to get hold of tickets to a special screening of the classic sci-fi trilogy. Things don’t quite go to plan. In real life the filmmakers are on a quest of their own. They need to raise $16,000 to make the film and they’re currently a 3rd of the way there with 2 weeks to go. They’re using IndieGoGo to crowd source support. If the trailer is anything to go by it should be really funny. Check it out below:
Head over to badfeelingfilm.com and support the fund raising effort if you want to see this film made. There are some perks available to supporters. I wanted to help spread the word.
Thanks for reading, may the force be with you
Dan
Weekly Rewind #105
Well, well, well, it’s been a while hasn’t it? A month or more has passed with little activity here. My apologies. Someone asked the other day if the RSS feed on my blog was broken. I wish that were the answer, but lately it seems to be more a case of the person writing the content being broken, or perhaps distracted is a better term. Events have overtaken me in the last month and finding the time and energy to write about them has been hard. I aim to put that right today though and update you properly. I’m not going to go through everything from the last month in chronological order, that would take ages. Instead we’ll have Match Of The Day style extended highlights package. Alan Hansen should be along to criticize the defending at the end.
Podcasting has continued at pace and I’ll deal with each show in turn. There’s been plenty of episodes of Linux Outlaws in the last month. We’re closing in on 1 million downloads now since our time on Libsyn. That’s a crazy figure when you think about it, but actually I reckon we probably broke that some time ago. We ran the show for a while before joining Libsyn and there’s always people mirroring episodes on their own servers. None of that counts towards the grand total. So if anyone asks I just say “oh yeah, we’re well over a million downloads” and cross my fingers behind my back. Well, they don’t know… oh, unless they read this. Did I mention we’re over a million downloads? *ahem*.
It’s been an eventful month for my Linux Outlaws co-host Fabian Scherschel as he left his job with an ISP in Cologne, and now he’s a professional Open Source writer for The H. He’ll even be moving to London in June to work full time at their office. I’m really happy for him and I guess now we can say we have a legitimate member of the tech press on the team. Since Feb 8th when I last posted here there have been 6 new episodes released. You can catch up on Linux Outlaws via the website at any time, you’re more than welcome aboard.
I’ve also appeared on some episodes of FLOSS Weekly in the last month. 3 to be precise. On Feb 8th I was drafted in to host the show with Simon Phipps. Randal injured his shoulder that day and couldn’t make it. The whole thing was very last minute but I think Simon and I pulled it together nicely. You can judge for yourself in episode 201. I then joined Aaron Newcomb the following week for episode 202 on Stunt Rally. Finally, last week I rejoined Randal to interview the guys behind oVirt. That was episode 203 and you can grab it now from the TWiT website. I’ve also continued with Rathole Radio of course and there’s been a couple of new episodes since my last update, episode 72 and episode 73. Both contain the usual eclectic mix of music you’ve come to expect, plus a fair amount of waffling which you probably expect by now too. As I write this it’s just under 2 months to this years Rathole Radio live event, a fact I’m becoming increasingly aware of. We’ve got a venue, LEAF On Bold St. We’ve got a date, Friday May 11th. However, I still need to complete the line up and sort out what I’ll do about tickets. Whether I’ll even use tickets or just make it free to attend this time and take donations. It’s hard to say right now. Lots to decide. I’m close to sorting out the line up and announcing it, that’s something. The rest of it I really need to get cracking with. I’ll let you know more about that ASAP.
A pic from our Zanzibar gig in Feb - Photo by Dave Forbes
One act I do have confirmed for the Rathole Radio gig is my own band 20lb Sounds. We’ve been busy of late. We had another gig at The Zanzibar on Saturday March 3rd and while I didn’t feel I played that well, others told me afterwards it was really good. So I guess it’s all a matter of perspective. Many friends came to support us which I really appreciated but our turn out was a bit low, I don’t know how many more gigs we’ll get there in future. We have one in June, I guess that’s make or break time. It’s difficult because I’ve tried hard to push our gigs and promote them around town. I’ve contacted all the local media outlets, got posters printed and put them up, and I’ve also been spreading the word in person wherever possible. Despite this we’re just not drawing a crowd and it can be disheartening. I think we’re a good band, I suppose I should I’m in the band. I’m biased, but we have many good songs and we can play a bit. When people do watch we often get a good reaction, yet getting them to come back is a battle. I suppose at some point I have to face the fact that most people just don’t like us as much as I hoped. I dunno, this all sounds rather like shoe-gazing self-pity doesn’t it? We have plenty of gigs coming up in the next 2-3 months so we’ll pick ourselves up again and try to win people over, one at a time if we have to.
While we’re talking about music I should let you know what’s happening with my long overdue album. Fresh with New Year energy and optimism I said I’d have this done and released in no time. In retrospect I don’t think that was ever very realistic. I underestimated my perfectionism and incessant need to tinker with things. I’m never totally happy with anything I do and it’s tempting to keep changing them. First I recorded 10 acoustic songs live. That went well but later I discovered the vocal mic was distorting at times during the performance. Back to the drawing board. Now I’ve been working on all the songs again and I have the basis of about 7 recorded. I will keep it simple as promised. 1 or maybe 2 guitars at most, vocal and harmonica. I also plan to record a couple of piano songs I wrote many years ago. The working title for the album right now is “Long Forgotten Tales”, that may change though. I’m going to make some little live videos to put on YouTube as promotion and I’ve been trying to clean up this very website in preparation. The bottom line is it’s progressing, just not as quickly as I’d hoped. I’ll post some videos and updates as I go along. Perhaps blogging through the process will help me work things out.
Something else that’s reared it’s head in the last month is the mythical beast known as OggCamp planning. Every year it pops up again. I love doing OggCamp though and I love that other people enjoy it most of all. I can’t reveal too much yet but things are taking shape. I’ve been pounding the pavement, having meetings and generally sorting things out. Our intrepid band of organisers are all working hard to bring you another OggCamp.
There’s so much more I could say, a month’s worth of stories but I think that’s enough for today. We’re pretty much up to date.
Upcoming:
I’m not appearing on FLOSS Weekly tomorrow but it’ll be the first one I’ve missed in four shows, so I can’t complain. There’s Jelly Liverpool at LEAF on Thursday and following that in the evening we’ll be doing Ignite Liverpool as well. It’s the 9th Ignite we’ve organised and they’re always fun. The basic format is 5 minute talks from a wide selection of speakers about a varying range of topics. Anything the speaker cares about really. It always throws up discussions and opens your mind. It’s 6pm on Thursday 15th March at LEAF On Bold St. Entry is free and the venue is lovely. Come along, it’s worth it. At the weekend I have more live Rathole Radio on Sunday and we’ll be back with live Linux Outlaws on Monday evening. There’ll be much more to talk about next week and I’ll be sure not to leave you hanging this time. I have said it many times before but I’m confident regular posts are just around the corner. If you’d like to leave me a comment or discuss anything I’ve mentioned please do. All thoughts are welcome.
I’ll report back soon, until then you take care of yourselves.

RatholeRadio 73 – 6th Mar 2012
A slightly overdue Rathole Radio this time. I missed the live show on Sunday unfortunately due to exhaustion, so I recorded this show offline instead. I skipped the live song but I did manage to cram in a bumper selection of eclectic music as always. Normal service will be resumed next time I promise.
- 00:00 – The Gentlemen – Three Minute Marriage Proposal – License Unknown – A great band I heard via AMPed new music weekly and had to share. Love this song and it’s energy. Very well produced too.
- 07:25 – Dumbo Get’s Mad – Marmalade Kids – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – Another track from CC netlabel Bad Panda Records, I’ve mentioned them a lot. This track is from the album Elephants At The Door released in Feb 2011.
- 11:41 – Zoe Mulford – Just Before I Go – License Unknown – Another one I heard via Graham Holland. I actually saw Zoe performing with Lorelei Loveridge at the View Two gallery in Liverpool back in 2010. It was one of Graham’s Liverpool Acoustic nights and I was really impressed.
- 19:20 – vvsmusic – Greensleeves – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – From Hamburg in Germany, VVS is a composer and arranger who makes music for films and much more besides. He’s also a software developer and designer. A multi-talented guy it seems. This arrangement of the well known classic Greensleeves is currently number 2 in the Jamendo top 100.
- 22:15 – Bobo In White Wooden Houses – I Wanna Keep You On My Side – License Unknown – Thanks to Moggers87 for this one. Another German artist, lots of those lately. The website has lots of pictures and other things but no real biog or info on the band that I can see. However, they sound great and I hope to find out more.
- 30:58 – Black Bones – Pirates Of The Coast – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – I have to thank my Linux Outlaws co-host Fab for bringing this to my attention. He got it via a listener who I think heard it via Dave & Caroline at The Bugcast. All very convoluted. Black Bones are a pirate metal band from Piacenza, Italy. This is the opening track off their album of the title. It’s available from Jamendo.
- 34:56 – Black Bones – We’ll Rise Again – CC BY-NC-SA Licensed – The second track off the album Pirates Of The Coast but it leads in from the first one so I wanted to play it.
I was on TuxJam with @kevie, check it out!
- 40:18 – felixjd – _make_believe_ – CC BY Licensed – A funky house track I picked up from Jamendo. It’s by an Italian artist who I can’t tell you a whole lot more about but it sounds good. They’re from Milan and there’s a stack of albums to dig through on Jamendo. I found a MySpace link but not much else. If you find out more let me know.
- 44:56 – vitaminsforyou – Six O’Clock Whispers – CC BY-NC-ND Licensed – This one was submitted to AMPed by Idyllic Music. Nice bit of electro. You can get this on Archive.org
- 56:06 – William Michael Dillon – Black Robes & Lawyers – License Unknown – Heard this one via fellow Liverpool podcaster Graham Holland. A great track and it’s good to play some blues again. Read Dillon’s story from his site, wrongly imprisoned for 27 years he was cleared by DNA evidence in 2008. Now he makes music and campaigns against injustice.
